Hello there, this was also another performance that I enjoyed for several reasons for starters I enjoyed how it was a young ethnic woman who was singing opera. Given what we have learned this past quarter, opera and its history often mimicked certain ethnic groups for entertainment. Li's voice was very powerful, the notes that she was able to reach showed how great of a range she was able to present vocally. She looked strong and confident and really shined on stage.

In terms of the historical context associated with this performance the About section of the program is a great way to learn more not just about what is being performed or presented but also about the performer(s) themselves. In this case, the program discusses how Li enjoys a career full of singing and teaching, it is also clear that she loves competing and performing on stage. Li has won several awards for her singing and has traveled across the world to let her talent shine. Although Li has a lot of awards up her sleeve I had difficulty finding information about her on the internet. A quick internet search finds nothing in association with this young singer. The internet is usually the quickest and easiest way to find additional information on a person or a subject of interest. This time around, I was able to find information about her on the PLU Facebook page. The page shared a longer version of her biography which was very detailed, this is another takeaway from this course... finding information through local and or community outreach. You can see the bio that I was able to find here: Fan Li Story.
The dress than Li decided to wear for her recital really popped behind the bland background of the plain stage behind her. Her floor length formal attire with an ombré pattern in various shades of blues was pleasing to the eye and served its purpose as she was the main performer and the attention remained on her. From what we learned about opera - particularly in week five, its influence, led many cultures participate by creating their own stories set to music. Li's voice was beautiful and her facial expressions told a story of their own, this really helped as the songs were not sang in English! It really emphasized the importance of acting within the performance itself, through Li's facial expressions and body language you knew when she was sad versus when she was happy. You will find the online program here: Fan Li Recital Program. Below you can also follow a link to the university's online page which showcases live streaming of some to most of the performances at Lagerquist Concert Hall.

I didn't like how the audience behaved at this performance at all, it was clear that over half of the audience members were on their phones throughout the entirety of the recital. The first few rows had to be filled with Li's closest family and friends, as they had video cameras in hand and were recording and were also constantly taking digital photos of the performer. You could also see that there were several students in attendance to fulfill class assignments because a handful were on their laptops and others were note taking by hand. Given that I was seated towards the back of the performance hall I was able to see most if not all of the poor etiquette in attendance! Overall, there was too much going on and it truly distracted me from solely focusing on the talent that Li and Yi were providing for everyone in the audience. I thought that it was quite rude and I felt sorry for the performers as they were not getting the respect that they deserved. Likewise, audience members who were there to enjoy the performance were not able to enjoy it in full due to the distractions that the crowd provided during their experience. To end on a high note, Jinshil Yi deserves a shout out for her role in the performance. Yi played beautifully throughout the entire recital. You could feel the raw passion that she has for playing the piano, her playing served as a wonderful accompaniment to Yi and together they provided a great performance!

Until next time,
- A
